How to write a historical essay

Writing historical articles is one of the most common tasks in school and the most complicated at the university. Not everyone can coherently express their thoughts and suggestions, especially when it comes to substantiating your findings referring to the exact historical event or figure, where you need to organize the material, using basic concepts and highlighting causal relationships, illustrated by the experience of relevant examples.

  1. Starting writing on the history, first, decide the key theme and problem. It is possible that the teacher has given you a topic with little search relevance, on which there is fewer data. But in any case, it is not the hardest part yet. When you have chosen a topic or identified the primary purpose, the next step in the work - searching the available data on the relevant topic. Try to study it in details, because history adores details and root causes. Perhaps, even if initially you do not stock up with enough material, you now have the response plan of actions and proposals, from which you can build an introduction and the main part.
  2. Then you need to organize and systematize the found information. Make a plan of reasoning, based on the cause-and-effect relationships between events, which will be discussed in your essay. Do not defeat the plan, as it was boring at first, apparently can become a big investigation afterward: by following to a strict scheme, you will build your essay in a logical way, so you have no need in return and rewrite everything. As a rule, for the violation of logic in reasoning often causes a reduction of the score.
  3. Before you start writing an essay, take into the consideration arguments and counter-arguments - to put it simply: "for" and "against." Think about them in advance, because later you will have no time to "slip" on a lengthy discourse. Write them in a column, briefly in the form of abstracts, and then, polish these dry arguments with a force of your eloquence. But do not forget: history likes evidence and facts, avoid the "water."
  4. The plan and list of abstracts are ready; the idea formed in your head already, I hope, so you can get the paper and start to perform. When capturing the main body of the essay, it is better to give the preference to journalistic style of speech. In order to verify the required form of writing, consult with your tutor or a professor, maybe in your particular case, you need to lean to the scientific style. However, the significant element - do not use the conversational style. This part also involves reasoning and analysis, as well as to substantiate the thesis, based on the available data and the positions on this issue. Give your point of view and its confirmation from selected arguments based on historical facts, journalistic and literary sources or social experience. In the process of construction of the essay, remember that one paragraph should contain only one approval and corresponding proof.

At the end of the essay, be sure to compose a clear conclusion. The lack of output is punished to the fullest extent of the academic law. So, setting out all the arguments, be sure to fasten a connection between your arguments and a conclusion. And do not forget to add your own opinion, often it is exactly what is required from the author of the essay - express a clear conclusion from the preceding arguments, confirming its attitude to the problem. You can complete the essay with a rhetorical question or an appeal to the reader.
